Remember the most experienced healthcare professionals probably, more often than not, send patients to the ER for things that don’t turn out to be that serious. We’re like baseball players, so even the Hall of Famers get a hit only one out of three times at best. So if you are in doubt, about signs such as weakness, slurring of speech, or just not acting right, don’t be embarrassed that you might ultimately be wrong whether that person across the table from you is having a stroke or not. Be a friend, and don’t hesitate to call 911! PS, the same rules apply to you if you’re having symptoms of a stroke.
As the old song goes, “memories sweeten through the ages just like wine” but they also can become fleeting. Probably a week doesn’t go by, without a patient expressing concerns about their memory. I’m sure if a survey was done here in Tucson, memory loss, would be one of the greatest concerns for us as we get older. I just read a very interesting, and short article in the Journal of the American Medical Association ( JAMA), about memory loss.
Save a friend, save yourself
Let’s say you were at lunch at one of our great restaurants here in Tucson, with a group of friends or your family, and suddenly, one of those friends just doesn’t look or sound right. Maybe she has a droopy mouth, or sudden inability to express herself or difficulty moving her hand or arm. There’s something you can do, that could save a life, and that’s remembering the possibility your friend could be having a stroke.
Blood clots
Blood clots can occur & have serious consequences for both younger and older people. Among the many reasons that some people are more prone to develop blood clots, include genetic factors, use of certain medications, such as some birth-control pills, cancer, recent surgery, fractures, or prolonged inactivity.
Sports physicals:
Youth sports leagues, along with high school intramurals and team sports are great ways for young people to grow both strong physically, socially and mentally. Participating in sporting activities, can help build strong exercise habits and character traits for life. When coming in for your pre-sports physical, it’s important to let your healthcare. professional know if you’ve ever “passed out” during exercise. Don’t assume you passed out because we live in such a hot, dry area and you might have been dehydrated. The bottom line is that whatever activity you choose make sure your healthcare professional is part of your team’s success!
